All task-level enterprise outline codes are collapsed when you use Project Data Service to add a new outline code in Project 2003

In Microsoft Office Project 2003, you use Project Data Service to create a task-level enterprise outline code structure in which all levels of the outlined code are expanded. Then you try to use Project Data Service to add a new task-level enterprise outline code. When you do this, all task-level enterprise outline codes are collapsed.

For example, you create a task-level enterprise outline code structure in which all levels of the outlined code are expanded as follows:

-Level 1
- Level 2 When you use Project Data Service to add a new task-level enterprise outline code, the outlined codes are collapsed as follows:

+ Level 1
+ Level 2

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Project 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Microsoft Office Project 2003 post-Service Pack 1 Hotfix Package that is dated February 6, 2006. How to enable the hotfix

To enable this hotfix, you must add the ExpandOutlineCodeUpto key to the registry. Add this key to the following registry keys:

• \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\MS Project\ ExpandOutlineCodeUpto
• \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\office\11.0\MS project\

Note The value that is set in the first key is detected first. This value overrides any settings that are made in the second key.

To enable the hotfix in the \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\MS Project\ ExpandOutlineCodeUpto key, follow these steps:

1. Close Project 2003.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Expand the following registry key:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\MS Project
4. Right-click MS Project, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type ExpandOutlineCodeUpto, and then press ENTER to name the key.
6. Click the ExpandOutlineCodeUpto key.
7. Right-click Default, and then click Modify.
8. In the Value data box, type one of the following values:
   • Type 0 to expand the whole outline code table
   • Type 1 or a higher number to expand the level of outline code to that number of levels. For example, type 1 to expand to one level of outline code, type 2 to expand to two levels of outline code, type 3 to expand to three levels of outline code, and so on.
   • Type -1 to collapse the whole outline code table.
9. Click OK.
10. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

To enable the hotfix in the \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\office\11.0\ms project\ key, follow these steps:

1. Close Office Project 2003.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Expand the following registry key:
   \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\office\11.0\MS project
4. Right-click MS Project, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type ExpandOutlineCodeUpto, and then press ENTER to name the key.
6. Click the ExpandOutlineCodeUpto key.
7. Right-click Default, and then click Modify.
8. In the Value data box, type one of the following values:
   • Type 0 to expand the whole outline code table
   • Type 1 or a higher number to expand the level of outline code to that number of levels. For example, type 1 to expand to one level of outline code, type 2 to expand to two levels of outline code, type 3 to expand to three levels of outline code, and so on.
   • Type -1 to collapse the whole outline code table.
9. Click OK.
10. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

Note To return to the default behavior of Project 2003 in which the whole outline code table is collapsed, use one of the following methods:

• Type -1 in the ExpandOutlineCodeUpto key's Value data box
• Remove the following registry keys:
  \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\MS Project\ ExpandOutlineCodeUpto
  \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\office\11.0\MS project\ExpandOutlineCodeUpto

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Project 2003 Service Pack 3.
