SYMPTOMS

When you use the MOMInfo.exe tool to enter or to exit maintenance mode from a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 agent-managed computer, the agent may not actually enter or exit maintenance mode as expected. This problem occurs when you use the MOMInfo.exe tool together with the maintenance mode parameter. In this case, the MOM Operator console may display the following messages.

After you try to start maintenance mode
Event 22153 - Maintenance mode request
After you try to start exit mode
Event 22154 - Maintenance mode exit request
When you view the computer's agent status in the MOM 2005 Operator console, the agent may not show the expected maintenance mode status.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a timing issue that occurs when MOM 2005 processes internal events to determine the agent mode.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manage agent maintenance mode from the MOM Management Server.

Note You can use different views to manage agent maintenance mode. These procedures use All: Computers and Groups Views.

To manually put an agent in maintenance mode, follow these steps:
  1. Open the MOM Operator console, click All: Computers and Groups Views, and then click the Computers view.
  2. In Computers, right-click the computer that you want to put in maintenance mode, and then click Put Computer in Maintenance Mode...
  3. In the Maintenance Mode window, configure how long you want the agent to be in maintenance mode, and then click OK.
To manually remove an agent from maintenance mode, follow these steps:
  1. Open the MOM Operator console, click All: Computers and Groups Views, and then click the Computers view.
  2. In Computers, right-click the computer that you want to remove from maintenance mode, and then click Remove Computer from Maintenance Mode...
  3. When you are prompted, click Yes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The MOM 2005 Resource Kit includes the MOMInfo.exe tool. This tool enables an agent to enter or to exit maintenance mode without direct server-side intervention. The MOMInfo.exe tool does this by generating specific internal events to trigger Management Server action. When you enter or exit maintenance mode by using the MOMInfo.exe tool together with the maintenance mode parameter, the MOM Operator console should display the following messages.

After you try to start maintenance mode
Event 22153 - Maintenance mode request
Event 10015 - Maintenance mode Start
After you try to start exit mode
Event 22154 - Maintenance mode exit request
Event 10016 - Maintenance mode Stop
