SUMMARY

This article describes how to connect an Xbox 360 console to a network port that is located in a separate room.

MORE INFORMATION

Depending on the location of your equipment, if you want to connect an Xbox 360 console to a network port that is located in a separate room, you may require an additional Ethernet cable. You can purchase Ethernet cables in various lengths. Typically, you can purchase Ethernet cables in one meter, five meter, ten meter, twenty meter, and twenty-five meter lengths. If you need a longer cable for your connection, you can buy an Ethernet coupler. An Ethernet coupler is a device that attaches two Ethernet cables together.

Note The maximum length for a single Ethernet cable including coupler is 100 meters or 328 feet. If you require an Ethernet cable that is longer than 100 meters, you must purchase a repeater. A repeater is an electronic device that connects two Ethernet cables and boosts the signal to let you extend beyond the 100-meter limit.

The following example shows the two typical connection paths that you can use when you have to use Internet Connection Sharing and two Ethernet cables to connect to a computer in another room.
If the console is less than 100 meters away from the computer, use the following sequence:
Network adapter in the computer -> Ethernet cable -> coupler -> Ethernet cable -> Xbox 360 console
If the console is more than 100 meters away from the computer, use the following sequence:
Network adapter in the computer -> Ethernet cable -> Repeater -> Ethernet cable -> Xbox console
Alternatively, you can use an Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter to set up a wireless network. For more information about how to use the Xbox 360 Connectivity Wizard, visit the following Web site:
