INTRODUCTION

After you press the mute button on your remote control, closed captioning may not appear. This article provides steps you can try to resolve the problem.

SYMPTOMS

When you press the mute button on the remote control during TV playback, closed captioning may not appear even if Windows Media Center is configured to display closed captioning when the audio is muted.

CAUSE

This problem may occur for several reasons:
  • Windows Media Center is not set to display closed captioning.
  • Your television is not set to display closed captioning.
  • The audio-visual (AV) cable that connects the Xbox 360 console to the television does not support closed captioning.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Closed captioning may be turned off on your TV. To turn on closed captioning, see the TV user's manual.
  2. You may be using a component video output cable to connect your Xbox 360 console to your TV. Xbox 360 currently does not support closed captioning through component video output. To see closed captioning when you are using your Xbox 360, connect your Xbox 360 console to your TV by using either an S-video cable or a composite video output cable.
  3. On the Media Center PC, make sure that closed captioning is turned on. To turn closed captioning on or off, follow these steps:
    1. Press the Start button on the remote control, or select the Media Center option in the Media area of the Xbox Dashboard.
    2. When you are connected to the Media Center PC, select Settings.
    3. Select TV, and then select Audio.
    4. Under Caption Display, do one of the following:
      • Select On.
      • Select Off.
      • Select On when muted.
    5. Select Save.
