CAUSE

This usually happens when a firewall blocks the communication ports, or when the firewall service is unresponsive.

THINGS TO TRY

Method 1: Check the firewall configuration

If you use the Microsoft Windows Firewall, make sure the firewall service is running and that the Don’t allow exceptions check box in the Windows Firewall is not selected.

Note If the Don’t allow exceptions check box is selected, no ports are open, which means your Xbox 360 console can't communicate with your Media Center-based computer.

Method 2: Troubleshoot network problems

Problems with your home network may be preventing a successful connection. Examples of such problems are too much network traffic, a faulty network router, and faulty cabling.

To determine if the network or the network router is causing the issue, temporarily connect your Xbox 360 console directly to your Media Center PC by using an Ethernet cable. If you can complete setup when the two are directly connected, troubleshoot your router or switch or any other network components between your computer and your Xbox 360 console.

Note The Ethernet cable does not have to be a cross-over cable. The Xbox 360 can switch network modes and connect to the computer.
