When you save a file in Word 2003 or Word 2002, the file is given a "~XXXX.temp.doc" name

When you save a document in Microsoft Office Word 2003 or in Microsoft Word 2002, the file is given the following name:Note XXXX is a sequence of characters and numbers that is generated by Word to name temporary files. The number of characters and numbers may vary. For example, you may be prompted to save the file as ~WRC003.tmp.doc.

This behavior occurs if the following conditions are true:

• The Application Data folder and the My Documents folder have been configured for redirection by using a Group Policy.
• The following check boxes are selected on the Save tab in the Options dialog box in Word:
  • Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives
  • Save AutoRecover info every: N minutes
    
    Note The interval at which the AutoRecover feature saves information to disk is selected in the minutes box on the Save tab.

To resolve this behavior, you must change the location of the Auto Recovery folder. To do this, follow these steps:

1. In Word, on the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the File Locations tab.
3. In the File types column, click AutoRecover Files, and then click Modify.
4. In the Look in box, click a local drive, and then click the folder in which you want to save the files. For example, if you want to save the AutoRecover files to the C:\temp folder, follow these steps:
   1. In the Look in box, click drive C.
   2. In the list of folders that is displayed, click the Temp folder, and then click OK.
   3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

By default, the Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives and Save AutoRecover info every N minutes options are configured to save the user's files to the Application Data folder. When this folder is redirected, the files are given a temp.doc name.
