SYMPTOMS

When you type two initial capital letters in a word in Microsoft Office Word 2003 or in Microsoft Word 2002, the AutoCorrect feature does not automatically change the second capital letter to a lowercase letter. This behavior occurs even when the Correct TWo INitial CApitals check box is selected in the AutoCorrect dialog box. To find the AutoCorrect dialog box, click AutoCorrect Options on the Tools menu.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The Check spelling as you type check box is selected on the Spelling & Grammar tab in the Options dialog box.
  • Word does not recognize the word.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Open a blank document in Word.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Spelling & Grammar tab, and then click to clear the Check spelling as you type check box.
  4. Click Custom Dictionaries.
  5. In the Dictionary list, click the dictionary that you want. Make sure that you do not click to clear its check box.
  6. Click Modify.
  7. Type the word in the Word box, and then click Add.
  8. Click OK three times.
