When you use incorrect syntax to type a URL in a Web browser, the Web browser may stop responding for several minutes.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

•	You are using a computer that is behind Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004.
•	The Web browser is configured to use the Windows Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD) file.
•	You have added IP addresses to the proxy exceptions list to bypass the proxy server.

This problem is caused by the auto-generated Windows Proxy Auto Discovery (WPAD) file. This file makes the Web browser examine the proxy exceptions list to resolve names for a URL that contains incorrect syntax. The Web browser waits to respond until the name resolution time-out period has elapsed for all IP addresses in the proxy exceptions list.

To work around this problem, do not add IP addresses to the proxy exceptions list.

Note Use this workaround if you will not be installing ISA Server 2004 Service Pack 2.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in ISA Server 2004 Service Pack 2.
