The page numbers in the table of contents are incorrectly displayed when you open a document in Word 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2010

When you open a document in Microsoft Office Word 2002, 2003, 2007 or 2010 the page numbers are incorrectly displayed in the table of contents. For example, the number two is repeated for all page numbers. Alternatively, the number three is repeated for all page numbers after page three.

This behavior occurs if all the following conditions are true:

• You open the document from a Microsoft Outlook e-mail attachment.
• The Allow starting in Reading Layout option is turned on in Word.
• The table of contents in the document is three or more pages long.

When you send a Word document as an e-mail attachment, make sure that you save the document in normal or print layout view before you send the document. To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Turn off reading layout view

1. Start Word.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click the General tab, click to clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box, and then click OK.

Method 2: Turn on all formatting marks

1. Start Word.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click the View tab, click to select the All check box under Formatting marks, and then click OK.

Method 3: Manually update all the page numbers

1. Open the Word document.
2. Select the table of contents in the document, and then press F9 to update all the page numbers.

Method 4: Repaginate the document

1. Open the Word document.
2. View the document in print preview
3. Close the print preview
4. In the document scroll to the last page of the document
5. View the document in print preview again or use the F9 to update the TOC field.
