Student 2006: Error message when you install Student 2006: "Could not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0\CLSID"

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Student 2006, you may receive the following error message:
Could not open key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0\CLSID"

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one or both of the following conditions is true:
  • The registry entries are corrupted.
  • The permissions are incorrect in the Microsoft Windows Registry.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Replace the Student 2006 registry entries. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2
    3. Delete the following subkeys:
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.DSOControl.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.FreeThreadedDOMDocument.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.MXHTMLWriter.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.MXNamespaceManager.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.MXXMLWriter.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.SAXAttributes.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.SAXXMLReader.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.ServerXMLHTTP.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.XMLHTTP.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.XMLSchemaCache.4.0
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.XSLTemplate.4.0
    4. Exit Registry Editor.
    5. Download and then install the latest XML parser. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site, and then search for "XML":

    6. Try to install Student 2006. If you receive the same error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, go to step 2.
  2. Change permissions for the registry entries. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then right-click the following subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
    3. Click Permissions.
    4. Click Add, and then add the following accounts if they are not in the permissions list:
      • Administrators
      • SYSTEM
    5. Click each account that is listed. Make sure that the Full Control check box under Allow is selected.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Exit Registry Editor.
    8. Try to install Student 2006.
