FIX: A Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 hotfix rollup package is available that contains stability and reliability updates

A Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 hotfix rollup package is available that simplifies the maintenance of stability and reliability of Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 systems. We recommend that all Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 users apply this hotfix rollup package.

The hotfix rollup package contains the following updates:

• All updates for Server for Network Information Services (NIS), Password Synchronization, and Interix subsystem components of Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 that were released after the original release version of Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 and before January 31, 2006
• Additional reliability updates

By including all updates for Windows Services for UNIX 3.5, this hotfix rollup package makes it easier for users to improve the stability and reliability of computers that are running Windows Services for UNIX 3.5.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

You must have Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Changes in behavior

After you apply the hotfix rollup package, the open system call and the wcs_open system call support the O_NOFOLLOW flag. For more information about the O_NOFOLLOW flag, see the open system call and the wcs_open system call manual page (man page).

Known issues

You may experience any of the following issues after you apply the hotfix rollup package:

• Symptom
  After you apply the hotfix rollup package, setuid binaries that were not included with Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 stop working.
  
  Resolution
  Use the chmod utility to reenable the setuid permissions for each affected binary.
• Symptom
  After you apply the hotfix rollup package, setuid binaries that are copied from one system to another system stop working.
  
  Resolution
  After you copy the binary to the destination computer, use the chmod utility to assign the setuid permissions for each affected binary.
• Symptom
  The hotfix rollup package does not modify any Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 component that is added after the hotfix rollup package is applied.
  
  Resolution
  Remove and reapply the hotfix rollup package after you add a feature to Windows Services for UNIX 3.5.
