Article ID: 913486 - Last Review: July 26, 2006 - Revision: 1.3 DHCP no longer automatically renews the IP address of a Windows CE .NET 4.2-based deviceOn This PageSYMPTOMSWhen you connect a Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.2-based device over a wireless network, you may receive the following error message: DHCP was unable to obtain an IP address. If the netcard is removable, then you can remove/reinsert it to have DHCP make another attempt to obtain an IP address for it. Otherwise, you can statically assign an address. Note Under certain conditions, the device no longer automatically obtains a new IP address. This problem occurs even after the connection to the wireless access point is restored. CAUSEThis problem occurs when the network card informs the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) protocol of a media disconnect. The sequence in which DHCP receives this notification makes it believe that the network adapter is no longer available. Therefore, DHCP no longer tries to obtain an IP address, even though the network adapter is functioning correctly.
