Components of the Network Diagnostics for Windows XP tool

The Network Diagnostics for Windows XP tool consists of the following components:

The User Interface
The User Interface runs like a Windows wizard. It prompts the user to perform automated and manual tasks to resolve the network connectivity issues. Users can "opt-in" and have the diagnostic send information to Microsoft.
The Diagnostic Decision Unit
The Diagnostic Decision Unit runs in the background. It is responsible for processing diagnostic information and for presenting information about status to the User Interface.
The Logging Component
The Logging Component is responsible for writing information about the diagnostic run to an .xml file that is stored on the system. Users can view detailed information about the diagnostic run every time that it finishes.
The Service Quality Measurement Component
The Service Quality Measurement Component collects information about how the tool is running. This component collects information about the successes and failures of each diagnostic component as they try to diagnose network connectivity problems. This information can be transmitted to Microsoft for analysis and for help improving the tool.

Note The information that is sent to Microsoft contains no information about the user or about any data that can be linked back to a specific user or computer.

Registry setting that allows for troubleshooting if a third-party program is managing the wireless service

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

The Network Diagnostics for Windows XP tool will not perform wireless troubleshooting if a third-party program is managing the wireless service. To change this behavior, add a DWORD entry that is named WIRELESS_bail_out to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Then, give this new entry a value of 1. When the value of this new entry is set to 1, the user is prompted to allow for Windows to manage the wireless service.

Note The specific affected service may vary, depending on the third-party program.

To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Network Diagnostic
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type WIRELESS_bail_out for the name of the DWORD entry, and then press ENTER.
Right-click WIRELESS_bail_out, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Exit Registry Editor.

To disable this entry, delete the WIRELESS_bail_out entry or set its value to 0.

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

The Network Diagnostics for Windows XP tool has a debugging option to enable detailed debugging. The detailed debugging option logs detailed debugging information in the %Windir%\Debug\Xpnetdiag.log file. To enable debug logging, add a DWORD entry that is named Debug to the following registry subkey

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Then, give this entry a value of 1. To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Network Diagnostic
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type Debug for the name of the DWORD entry, and then press ENTER.
Right-click Debug, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Exit Registry Editor.
