SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows Defender on a computer that is running a non-English language version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1609

An error occurred while applying security settings. User is not a valid user or group. This could be a problem with the package, or a problem connecting to a domain controller on the network.

RESOLUTION

An updated version of Windows Defender is available. To download the updated version, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)
If you are running Windows Defender on a non-English version of Windows, uninstall the earlier version, and then install the latest version. If you are running an English version of Windows, you do not have to install the updated version.
