Error message when you start the DHCP Client service on a Windows XP-based computer: "Error 1075"

Consider the following scenario. You restart a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer. You notice that the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Client service does not start. Then, you try to start this service by using the Services snap-in. When this scenario occurs, you receive the following error message:Additionally, an event that is similar to the following is logged in the System event log:

The DHCP Client service depends on the following nonexistent service: Service Name

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

• An application adds itself as a DHCP Client service dependency during installation.
• Then, the application is uninstalled incorrectly.

When these conditions are true, the application services are left as dependencies.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

• Reinstall or repair the missing application.
• Install the DHCP Client service dependency in the registry. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp
  3. Right-click the DependOnService entry, and then click Modify.
  4. In the Value data box, delete the service that is described in the event that appears in the "Symptoms" section.
     
     Note Typically, the only services that are in the DependOnService entry are the following services:
     • Tcpip
     • Afd
     • NetBt
  5. Close Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
