SYMPTOMS

In an Active Directory domain environment, you try to access shared resources by using Windows Explorer. You use Windows Explorer from a client computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP. However, you experience slow performance when you access shared resources.

Note This problem may also occur with applications that frequently access shared resources.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Distributed File System (DFS) client sends out redundant DFS referral requests.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
