You cannot use Communicator 2005 to participate in a video conversation with Communicator 2007

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 to participate in a video conversation with someone who uses Microsoft Office Communicator 2007, you are unsuccessful.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the real-time video codec that Communicator 2005 uses is incompatible with the real-time video codec that Communicator 2007 uses.

Communicator 2005 uses the Msrtv video codec. This codec is a proprietary codec. Communicator 2007 uses the standard Rtvc1 video codec.

RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Communicator 2005 Hotfix Package that is dated July 18, 2006. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

This hotfix package adds support for the Rtvc1 codec to Communicator 2005. Therefore, after you apply this hotfix, you can use Communicator 2005 to participate in a video conversation with someone who uses Communicator 2007.
