Error message when you change the SQL Server service account for a clustered instance of SQL Server 2005: "The system cannot find the file specified."

SYMPTOMS

In a cluster environment, you install a stand-alone instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on one node. After you do this, you install a clustered instance of SQL Server 2005 for the cluster. When you change the SQL Server service account for the clustered instance, you may receive the following error message:
The system cannot find the file specified.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of incorrect logic that occurs during the SQL Server service account change. This issue occurs in certain configurations in both clustered and non-clustered instances.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2005. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must change the SQL Server service account from the node that has the stand-alone instance installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1.
