When you use Automatic Updates or the Windows Update Web site to try to install software update 898461 in Microsoft Windows XP, the installation fails. The Windows Update History log shows that the update installation was canceled.
This issue can occur if there is a problem with the Spupdsvc.exe file. The path of the file is
%windir%:\Windows\System32\Spupdsvc.exe.
Note %windir% is a placeholder for the folder where Windows is installed.
To resolve this issue, rename the Spupdsvc.exe file to a different file name, such as
SpupdsvcOld.exe.
