INTRODUCTION

This article describes synchronization exceptions in a Groove File Sharing workspace or in a SharePoint Workspace Shared Folder.

MORE INFORMATION

If files in a Groove File Sharing synchronized folder or in a SharePoint Workspace Shared Folder do not synchronize among members or among computers, follow these steps.

Step 1: Verify the folder's download settings

To examine the download settings, open the workspace folder from Launchbar, and then in the Shared Folder Synchronization sidebar, click Edit this folder's download Settings. When the folder is set to Manual Download, only requested files will synchronize. When the folder is set to Limited Automatic Download, files that are larger than the given size must also be requested to synchronize.

Step 2: Verify the file name extension

The Groove File Sharing workspace or the Shared Folder will not synchronize any file that has a name that begins with a tilde (~) character or that has one of the following file name extensions:
  • .gfs
  • .tmp
  • .bak
  • .sav
  • .lnk
Microsoft Office Groove 2007 and Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010 can also be configured to block additional file types. For a list of additional file types that are blocked in your configuration, follow the instructions for your product version.
In Groove 2007, on the Options menu, click Preferences, click the Security tab, and then click View restricted types.

In SharePoint Workspace 2010, on the File tab, click Options, click Preferences, click the Security tab, and then click View restricted types.

Step 3: Verify the file attributes

The Groove File Sharing workspace or Shared Folder will not synchronize files that have the following attributes:
  • Hidden
  • System
  • Temporary
  • Offline
The only one of these attributes that you can change by using the Properties dialog box in Microsoft Windows is the Hidden attribute.

The Temporary attribute is usually used only for temporary files. However, software that is distributed with some cameras sets this attribute for its regular files programmatically.

You can obtain third-party software utilities that will enable you to change these file attributes. However, Microsoft has not evaluated any of these third-party software utilities for use with Groove.

Step 4: Verify file and folder sizes

A File Sharing workspace or Shared Folder will not synchronize any files that are larger than 1 GB. Additionally, Groove or SharePoint Workspace will stop synchronizing any File Sharing workspace or Shared Folder that exceeds the following file limits:
  • More than 5,000 files
  • A set of files that exceeds 2 GB in total size
Note Although these limits were not enforced in versions of Groove that are earlier than Groove 2007, these earlier versions are likely to encounter synchronization problems if you exceed these limits.

Step 5: Review the "File sharing workspace restrictions and warnings" topic

Review the "File sharing workspace restrictions and warnings" topic in the Groove Help or the "Shared Folder restrictions and warnings" topic in the SharePoint Workspace Help. You may be trying to share a restricted folder type or a restricted content type.
