Error message when you try to open a OneNote 2007 file in OneNote 2003: "This section is from a later version of OneNote and cannot be opened"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 file in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, the file does not open. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
This section is from a later version of OneNote and cannot be opened.

Your version cannot load this file, but a converter may be available on the Downloads on Office Online Web site.

CAUSE

Currently, there is no converter available to open OneNote 2007 files in an earlier version of OneNote. Additionally, there is no converter available to save files in OneNote 2007 as files from an earlier version of OneNote.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. In OneNote 2007, save the OneNote file as one of the following file types:
    • PDF (*.pdf)
    • Single File Web Page (Publish a copy)(*.mht)
  2. Use one of the following methods to open the file that you saved in step 1:
    • Open the .pdf file in a PDF reader program, such as Adobe Reader.

      To obtain Adobe Reader, visit the following Adobe Web site:
      http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
    • Open the .mht file in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  3. Copy the data from the .pdf file or from the .mht file. Then, paste the data to your OneNote 2003 notebook.
