Error message when you try to install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: "This access control list is not in canonical form"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that is joined to an Active Directory domain, you receive the following error message in the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard:
Failed to secure the SharePoint resources.

An exception of type System.Invalid.OperationException was thrown. Additional exception information: This access control list is not in canonical form and therefore cannot be modified.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you use the NewSID tool to change the security identifier (SID) of the computer or virtual machine.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Remove Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 from the computer.
  2. Join the computer to a workgroup, and then remove the computer account from the domain.
  3. Use the System Preparation tool (Sysprep.exe) to reset the SID of the computer.
  4. Restart the computer, and then rejoin the computer to the domain.
  5. Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on the computer.
