A hotfix is available to change the way in which Exchange Server 2003 names an .eml attachment when you use S/MIME in Outlook Web Access

This article describes a hotfix that you can apply to change the way in which Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 names an .eml e-mail attachment in Microsoft Outlook Web Access.

When you use Outlook Web Access to send or to receive e-mail messages, you can install S/MIME to enhance e-mail security. If you send a message that has an .eml attachment, the display name that Exchange creates for the attachment depends on whether the S/MIME control is installed on the client computer. In this situation, the following behavior occurs:

• If S/MIME is installed, Exchange parses the RFC 822 message and uses the message subject as the .eml attachment name.
• If S/MIME is not installed, Exchange uses the attachment file name as the .eml attachment name.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix. However, the following services are automatically stopped and then restarted when you apply this hotfix:

• The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
• The IIS Admin service
• The Microsoft Search service
• All other services that depend on these services

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Hotfix installation information

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

By default, the behavior of Exchange does not change after you install this hotfix. To change the way in which Exchange names an .eml attachment when you use S/MIME in Outlook Web Access, you must configure both the following registry entries.

• To enable the S/MIME control part of this hotfix, set the following registry entry:
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeWeb\OWA\

  
  
  Value name: SecurityFlags
  Value type: REG_DWORD
  Value data: 0x800
  When you set bit 12 (0x800) of the SecurityFlags registry entry to 1, Exchange ignores the subject in RFC 822 e-mail attachments.
• To enable the information store part of this hotfix, set the following registry entry:
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\InternetContent

  
  
  Value name: DoNotPromoteEmbeddedMessageSubject
  Value type: REG_DWORD
  Value data: Any non-zero value
  When you set this registry entry to a non-zero value, Exchange uses the attachment's file name as the attachment display name.

Important After you configure these registry entries, you must restart both the following services for the registry change to take effect:

• The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
• The IIS Admin service

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
