Windows Desktop Search 3.01

WDS 3.01 lets you perform an instant search of your computer. WDS 3.01 helps you find and preview documents, e-mail messages, music files, photos, and other items on the computer.

The search engine in WDS 3.01 is a Microsoft Windows service that is also used by programs such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. You can use this search engine to index a program's content and to obtain instant results when you search in a particular program.

WDS 3.01 includes the following improvements:
A new default policy setting to index Outlook mail only when Outlook is running in Cached Exchange Mode.

Note You must configure Group Policy to enable WDS to index Outlook mail when Outlook is not running in Cached Exchange Mode.
The Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks. This add-in lets WDS index redirected My Documents folders. This add-in also lets WDS index shared items on remote networks. By default, this add-in is included for supported 32-bit x86-based operating systems.
Support for the following enterprise Group Policy objects:
Prevent indexing when running on battery power to conserve energy
Prevent customizing indexed locations in the Control Panel
Allow using diacritics
Prevent displaying advanced indexing options in the Control Panel
Prevent indexing files in Offline Files cache
Prevent indexing uncached Exchange Folders
Prevent indexing Microsoft Office Outlook
Prevent User Defined Locations
Prevent indexing e-mail attachments
Control Rich Previews for Attachments
Prevent indexing public folders

Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center.

WDS 3.01 supports the following operating systems:
32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
All x64-based versions of Windows XP
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
All x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003
You cannot install WDS 3.01 on a computer that is running Windows Vista. WDS functionality is already built into Windows Vista.

WDS 3.01 provides fast indexing, improved performance, and improved file type support. The WDS 3.01 installation process automatically upgrades WDS 2.5 and later versions of WDS. If you have an earlier version than WDS 2.5 installed, use the Add or Remove Programs tool to remove the earlier version before you install WDS 3.01.

The Multilingual User Interface Pack for Windows Desktop Search 3.01

Microsoft released the MUI for WDS 3.01 on February 20, 2007. The MUI resources that many languages require are included in a single installation package. By default, the MUI uses the English language. Unlike earlier versions of WDS, the MUI for WDS 3.01 package is a superset of the stand-alone English package. Therefore, you do not have to install the English version of WDS 3.01 before you can install this MUI package. The MUI for WDS 3.01 is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center.
