This update for Microsoft Word 2002 provides the framework for a compatibility pack to open and to save files by using the Open XML file format that is new to the 2007 Microsoft Office system.

Known issues

Known issues that may occur after the update is installed

After you install update 917347, you may receive the following error message when you try to open a file that was previously saved in Microsoft Office Word 2007:
This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Word. Do you want to download a compatibility pack so that you can work with this file?

After you install update 917347, RTF documents that are created from other RTF editors may open in Word. However, these documents may be missing inserted graphics.

Note Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem. We are currently investigating it.

You may be able to resolve the missing graphics problem on a system that was not updated with update 917347. To do this, follow these steps:
1.In Word 2002, open the .rtf file.
2.On the Tools menu, click Options.
3.In the Options dialog box, click the Compatibility tab, set the Recommended option for setting to Microsoft Word 2002, and then click OK.
4.Resave the .rtf file.

Features for reinstalling specific components for administrators

If you update your administrative installation point and then recache and reinstall Word 2002 on client computers, you can run a command line that includes the REINSTALL=[list of features] property. This property specifies whether you want to reinstall specific components of Word 2002 from the administrative image. For update 917347, the value for [list of features] is as follows:

Alternatively, you can substitute the parameter REINSTALL=ALL to reinstall all Microsoft Office components on the client computer.
