SYMPTOMS

You cannot synchronize a Palm Tungsten C handheld device with a virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you use a USB connection to connect the handheld device with the computer that is running Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.

WORKAROUND

Warning This workaround may make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

You may be able to work around this issue if you use a Bluetooth connection to connect the handheld device with the computer. To configure the virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 to use a Bluetooth connection, follow these steps:
  1. Start Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.
  2. Click the virtual machine that you want to synchronize, and then click Settings.
  3. Under Current Settings, click Networking.
  4. Under Networking Settings, click Virtual Switch.
  5. Under Current Settings, click COM1 Port.
  6. Under COM1 Port Settings, click Mac serial port, click Bluetooth-PDA-Synch, and then click OK.
  7. Click the virtual machine that you want to synchronize, and then click Start Up.
  8. Press and hold down CTRL, click the HotSync Manager icon in the notification area, and then click Local Serial.
  9. Press and hold down CTRL, click the HotSync Manager icon in the notification area, and then click Setup.
  10. On the Local tab, click COM1 in the Serial port box, and then click OK.
  11. Click Start, click Run, type Wscui.cpl, and then click OK.

    Note This step starts the Security Center Control Panel. The Security Center Control Panel is unavailable in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and in earlier versions of Windows XP. The Security Center Control Panel is also unavailable in Microsoft Windows 2000.
  12. Under Resources, click Change the way Security Center alerts me.
  13. Click to clear the Firewall check box, and then click OK.

    Warning A firewall is designed to help protect the computer from attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. Viruses use unsolicited incoming network traffic to attack the computer. Before you disable your firewall, you must disconnect the computer from all networks. This includes the Internet.
