How to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 and Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 in a deployment that uses SQL Server 2005 as the database back end

Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) introduces support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005. This article describes a supported method that you can use to install SharePoint Portal Server SP2 and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 (SP2) if you use SQL Server 2005 as the database back end.

To install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2 if you use SQL Server 2005 as the database back end, you must first pass through an unsupported configuration. The original release version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) are not supported in a deployment that uses SQL Server 2005 as the database back end. Installing the original release version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Server SP1 in a deployment that uses SQL Server 2005 as the database back end is supported only in a scenario in which the installation path involves upgrading to SharePoint Portal Server SP2 and Windows SharePoint Services SP2.

Note When you install a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 service pack, make sure that you install a Windows SharePoint Services service pack that is at the same service pack level. For example, if you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2, make sure that you install Windows SharePoint Services SP2.

To install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 in a deployment that uses SQL Server 2005 as the database back end, follow these steps:

Install SQL Server 2005.
Install the original release version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
The Configure Server Farm Account Settings page is displayed after an installation. Fill in these settings. However, stop when you reach the point at which you create a configuration database. You can create a configuration database and the portal site after you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2.

Important Do not make any configuration changes in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 after you follow this step. For example, do not create a portal site. Running the original release version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services in a deployment that uses SQL Server 2005 as the database back end is not supported. Additionally, this configuration may cause unexpected behavior. Installing the original release version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services in a deployment that uses SQL Server 2005 as the database back end is supported only in a scenario in which the installation path involves upgrading to SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2 and Windows SharePoint Services SP2.
Install Windows SharePoint Services SP2.
Install SharePoint Portal Server SP2.

After you install Windows SharePoint Services SP2 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2, you can make the changes that you want to SharePoint Portal Server 2003. For example, you can create a configuration database and a portal site.

Note If you are running SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1 and Windows SharePoint Services SP1, install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2 and Windows SharePoint Services SP2. However, make sure that you did not make any configuration changes in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1. For example, make sure that you did not create a portal site. Running SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1 and Windows SharePoint Services SP1 in a deployment that uses SQL Server 2005 as the database back end is not supported. Additionally, this configuration may cause unexpected behavior.
