FIX: An access violation may occur when a .NET Framework 2.0-based application calls the IWebProxy.GetProxy method

SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0-based application, an access violation may occur. This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • In Microsoft Internet Explorer, the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up and VPN connections) option is selected, and the proxy Address value is not set.

    Note To access the proxy information in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
    1. Start Internet Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3. In the Internet Options dialog box, click Connections, and then click LAN Settings.
    4. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box, notice that the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up and VPN connections) option is selected and that the Address box is blank.
  • The application calls the IWebProxy.GetProxy method.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.
