FIX: The Analyze.exe utility may incorrectly remove files and projects in Visual SourceSafe 2005 when you run the utility by using the – d switch

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You restore a project from an archive in a Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 2005 database that was previously destroyed. You run the Analyze.exe utility by using the - d switch. In this scenario, the utility may incorrectly remove files and projects.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
You archive the project contents to an archive file.
You destroy the project contents.
You restore the project contents from the archive file.
You run the following command against the project database:
Analyze.exe -d
Note The project is destroyed by the REBUILD user.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
1.Run the following command to identify the files that do not have parent branches or child branches:
Analyze.exe –v4
2.Remove the identified files by using the application interface or by using a script.
