FIX: An Error event is logged in the System log when you set a COM component to run as the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM user on a computer that is running Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, you set a Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) component to run as the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM user. When you do this, an Error event that resembles the following is logged in the System log:

DCOM got error "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. " and was unable to logon NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM in order to run the server: GUID

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows XP does not support registering classes from processes that have the RunAs named value set to the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM user.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Windows XP COM+ Hotfix Rollup Package 14. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
