SYMPTOMSWhen you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 to visit a Web site on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you receive an error message that resembles the following: Page not found Additionally, when you click Start, click Run, type ipconfig, and then click OK, you receive an error message that resembles the following: An internal error occurred. Unable to query host name. RESOLUTIONImportant This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To do this, follow these steps:| a. | Right-click My Computer on the desktop, and then click Properties. | | b. | On the Computer Name tab, click Change. | | c. | Verify that the computer name is present in the Computer name box. | | d. | If the computer name is not present, type the computer name in the Computer name box, and then click OK two times. |
| | 2. | Verify that the Hostname and NV Hostname registry entries contain the computer name. To do this, follow these steps: | a. | Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. | | b. | In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters | | c. | In the right pane, double-click the Hostname registry entry, and then verify that the computer name is present in the Value data box. | | d. | If the computer name is not present, type the computer name in the Value data box, and then click OK. | | e. | In the right pane, double-click the NV Hostname registry entry, and verify that the computer name is present in the Value data box. | | f. | If the computer name is not present, type the computer name in the Value data box, and then click OK. |
| | 3. | If one or both of the Hostname and NV Hostname registry entries are not present, you must create the registry entries. To do this, follow these steps:| a. | On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value. | | b. | Type Hostname, and then press ENTER. | | c. | On the Edit menu, click Modify. | | d. | Type the computer name in the Value data box, and then click OK. | | e. | On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value. | | f. | Type NV Hostname, and then press ENTER. | | g. | On the Edit menu, click Modify. | | h. | Type the computer name in the Value data box, and then click OK. | | i. | Exit Registry Editor. |
