Error message when you try to insert a .cdr file in a program in the 2007 Microsoft Office system: "An error occurred when importing this file"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to insert a Corel Draw picture (.cdr file) in a program in the 2007 Microsoft Office system, the picture is not inserted. Additionally, you may receive one or both of the following error messages:
An error occurred when importing this file.
path to file
Preview not available.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • You insert the picture from a file.
  • The preview view is turned on in the Insert Picture dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Insert the picture as an object

To work around this issue on a computer that has Corel Draw installed, insert the picture as an object. To do this, follow these steps.

In PowerPoint 2007
  1. On the Insert tab, click Object in the Text group to open the Insert Object dialog box.
  2. Click Create from file.
  3. Click Browse, click the .cdr picture file, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK to close the Insert Picture dialog box.
In Excel 2007 and in Word 2007
  1. On the Insert tab, perform one of the following actions to open the Object dialog box:
    • In Excel 2007, click Object in the Text group.
    • In Word 2007, click Object in the Text group, and then click Object.
  2. On the Create from File tab, click Browse, click the .cdr picture file, and then click Insert.
  3. Click OK to close the Object dialog box.

Method 2: Save the picture in a different format

To work around this issue, use Corel Draw or a different graphics program to save the picture in a format that is supported by the programs in the 2007 Microsoft Office system. For example, save the picture in any of the following formats:
  • Enhanced Metafile (*.emf)
  • Windows Metafile (*.wmf)
  • JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg; *.jpeg; *.jfif; *.jpe)
  • Portable Network Graphics (*.png)
  • Windows Bitmap (*.bmp; *.dib; *.rle; *.bmz)
  • Graphics Interchange Format (*.gif; *.gfa)
  • Compressed Windows Enhanced Metafile (*.emz)
  • Compressed Windows Metafile (*.wmz)
  • Compressed Macintosh PICT (*.pcz)
  • Tag Image File Format (*.tif; *.tiff)
  • Computer Graphics Metafile (*.cgm)
  • Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps)
  • Macintosh PICT (*.pct; *.pict)
