Error message when a user tries to view a contact's properties in the GAL in Outlook Web Access on Exchange Server 2003: "HTTP 500 - Internal server error"

When a user tries to view a contact's properties in the global address list (GAL) in Microsoft Outlook Web Access, the user may receive the following error message:

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

• The user is connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 front-end server.
• The user views a contact in the GAL by opening a new form in Outlook Web Access. For example, the user clicks To in a new e-mail message. Then, the user tries to view the properties of a contact in the GAL.
• The user account is not a mailbox-enabled account in Exchange Server.
• The user has Full Mailbox permissions on another mailbox.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) before you install the hotfix.

The following services are automatically stopped and then restarted when you install this hotfix:

• The World Wide Web Publishing service
• The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
• The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service
• The Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service
• The HTTP SSL service
• The IIS Admin service

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem does not occur when client computers are connected to an Exchange Server 2003 back-end server.
