A large increase in memory usage occurs when you use the heapalloc function on a Windows XP-based computer

On a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you build a user-mode application. During this process, you use the heapalloc function to allocate system memory resources. In this scenario, the heap manager uses doubling functionality to add new heap areas. However, when the heap reaches 256 megabytes (MB) of memory, this doubling functionality unexpectedly requires a new contiguous 512-MB block of memory.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.Note After you apply this hotfix, Windows XP uses a 50-percent growth rate instead of a 100-percent growth rate. This reduces the rate at which the heap grows when the heap exceeds 256 MB.
