SYMPTOMS

When you run a complex query in SQL Server 2005, a handled access violation may occur in the CValSwitch::GetDataX function. Additionally, error messages that resemble the following are written to the SQL Server Errorlog file:

Date:Time spid61 SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 61 generated fatal exception c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL Server is terminating this process.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The query contains an outer join on two or more tables.
  • The query contains a WHERE clause that filters the results from an inner table of the outer join.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must have SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed to apply this hotfix.
