SYMPTOMS

When you run a complex query in SQL Server 2005, a handled access violation may occur in the CValSwitch::GetDataX function. Additionally, error messages that resemble the following are written to the SQL Server Errorlog file:
Error message 1
Date:Time spid61 Using 'dbghelp.dll' version '4.0.5'
Error message 1
Date:Time spid61 ***Stack Dump being sent to H:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG\SQLDump0001.txt
Error message 1
Date:Time spid61 SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 61 generated fatal exception c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL Server is terminating this process.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The query contains an outer join on two or more tables.
  • The query contains a WHERE clause that filters the results from an inner table of the outer join.
