Periods at the end of a message are removed when the message is sent to the SMTP Pickup folder in Internet Information Services 6.0

Consider the following scenario. You write a message to the SMTP Pickup folder on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0. The disablePickupDotStuff value is set to 0 in the IIS metabase by using the Smtpmd.exe tool. Alternatively, the SMTPDotStuffPickupDirFiles value is set to 0 in the IIS metabase by using the Metabase Explorer tool. In this scenario, some messages may be stuck in SMTP queue. When you view the messages, all the messages end with \r\n. instead of \r\n...\r\n.

After you apply this hotfix, the trailing dotCRLFm will be removed only when disablePickupDotStuff is set to 1.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 must be installed before you apply this hotfix.

You must restart the IIS 6.0 Admin Service after you apply this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Warning If you edit the metabase incorrectly, you can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall any product that uses the metabase. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result if you incorrectly edit the metabase can be solved. Edit the metabase at your own risk.

Note Always back up the metabase before you edit it.

If you want to remove the trailing .\r\n in an e-mail message that is dropped in the pickup folder, the disablePickupDotStuff property should be set to 1. If you do not want to remove the trailing .\r\n, the disablePickupDotStuff property should be set to 0. Alternatively, do not set the disablePickupDotStuff property. By default, the disablePickupDotStuff property is set to 0.

To set the DisablePickupDotStuff key value, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Smtpmd.exe utility

Note The Smtpmd.exe utility that you use to set this key is not available publicly. You must contact Microsoft Support to obtain this utility.

• Smtpmd set smtpsvc/1/DisablePickupDotStuff 1
• Smtpmd set smtpsvc/1/DisablePickupDotStuff 0

Note You must restart Internet Information Services to apply the changes.

Method 2: Use Metabase Explorer

Metabase Explorer is included in the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Tools. To obtain the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Tools, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

1. Run Metabase Explorer against the computer that is running the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service.
2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to IIS Resources, point to Metabase Explorer, and then click Metabase Explorer.
3. Expand LM, and then expand SmtpSvc.
4. Right-click the virtual instance object that you want to change, and then click Properties. Typically, this is the first virtual instance. This is indicated by a subnode named 1 under the SmtpSvc node.
   
   Note The virtual server instance object is the number that is associated with the default SMTP virtual server in IIS Manager. If there is only one SMTP virtual server, the number is 1.
5. Make sure that the value for the SMTPDotStuffPickupDirFiles property that has the ID of 37030 is set to 0 or 1, and then, click OK.
   
   Note Both disablePickupDotStuff and SMTPDotStuffPickupDirFiles will map to the same metabase ID 37030 from the different tool. In Metabase Explorer, you must use the SMTPDotStuffPickupDirFiles property instead of the DisablePickupDotStuff property.
6. Exit Metabase Explorer.
