SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 OS Deployment Feature Pack to try to capture user state data, the following error message is logged in the Scanstate.log file:

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the Scanstate.exe utility tries to access core operating system files during the scan process.

Note The Scanstate.exe utility is included in the Microsoft Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, add Sysfiles.inf to the list of .inf files in the operating system deployment package. This prevents the Scanstate.exe utility from scanning the core operating system files. To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
In the SMS Administrator Console, expand Image Packages, expand the operating system deployment package, and then click Programs.
Right-click the program, and then click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
In the Phase list, select State Capture, and then click Add.
Under Options, select Capture User State, and then click OK.
Type the location of the USMT files. By default, the USMT files are located in the C:\Usmt\Bin folder. The Migism.inf and Usmtdef.inf files are also located in this folder.
Click Add, click Sysfiles.inf, and then click OK two times.
Right-click Distribution Points, click All Tasks, and then click Update Distribution Points.
