SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You purchase a PlaysForSure-verified device, and you install the device. The device appears to be installed correctly. The device works correctly when you copy content that is ripped from CDs. In this scenario, the device does not work correctly when you copy purchased content or subscription content from online services. When you try to copy this kind of content, the content is not copied. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
0xC00D10BC - Windows Media Player cannot synchronize the file because the device needs to be updated.
Rio Carbon devices that have the PlaysForSure firmware may exhibit the problem that this article describes.

CAUSE

All new PlaysForSure-verified devices use a Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) driver to copy files to the device and from the device. This MTP driver supports the device operations that are required to support the transfer and the playback of purchased Microsoft Windows Media digital rights management (DRM)-protected content. Additionally, this MTP driver supports the device operations that are required to support the transfer and the playback of subscription Windows Media DRM-protected content. When protected content is transferred, the receiving device is evaluated to determine whether the device can correctly enforce the policies and the rights that are associated with the content.

A recent update was made to the information that is used by personal computers to evaluate devices. This update resulted in the discovery of an underlying defect in the MTP driver in Microsoft Windows Media Player 10. Therefore, some devices are incorrectly determined to be revoked and are no longer able to receive protected content.
