The functionality of a Visio 2007 drawing object does not occur when you edit the drawing in 2007 Office programs

Article ID:922973
Last Review:October 15, 2007
Revision:2.3

SYMPTOMS

When you edit certain Microsoft Visio drawing objects in a 2007 Microsoft Office program, the functionality of the object may not occur. For example, when you try to edit a Microsoft Office Visio 2007 pivot drawing, the pivot functionality does not occur. Instead, the pivot drawing appears to be disconnected from its data source. Additionally, the drawing lacks the ability to update nodes.

Similarly, UML Model diagrams do not function as expected. For example, you cannot update or view the model properties when you double-click the UML shapes.

This behavior may occur when you try to edit any of the following types of Visio drawings:
Pivot diagrams
UML Model diagrams

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when the Visio drawing object was pasted in another 2007 Office program such as Microsoft Office Word 2007 or Microsoft Office Excel 2007.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do not paste the Visio drawing object. Instead, insert the Visio drawing object into the 2007 Office program.

Note The steps to do this may be different for each 2007 Office program.

To insert the Visio drawing object in Word 2007, follow these steps:
1.In Visio 2007, save the drawing as a Visio 2007 drawing.
2.Start Word 2007.
3.Click the Insert tab.
4.Click Object in the Text group, and then click Object.
5.Click the Create from File tab.
6.Click Browse, locate and select the Visio 2007 drawing, and then click Insert.
7.Click OK to close the Object dialog box.
To insert the Visio drawing object in Excel 2007, follow these steps:
1.In Visio 2007, save the drawing as a Visio 2007 drawing.
2.Start Excel 2007.
3.Click the Insert tab.
4.Click Object in the Text group.
5.Click the Create from File tab.
6.Click Browse, locate and select the Visio 2007 drawing, and then click Insert.
7.Click OK to close the Object dialog box.
Note You must have Visio 2007 installed on the computer to edit the Visio drawing object. If you do not have Visio 2007 installed, you receive the following error message:
The program used to create this object is Visio. That program is not installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program that can open this object.
