Error message when you try to import video clips from a device on a Windows Vista-based computer: "The import device is not responding"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have multiple digital video cameras that are turned on and connected to a Microsoft Windows Vista-based computer. You try to import a video clip from a selected device. In this scenario, you cannot capture the video clip from the selected device. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The import device is not responding. Make sure only one device is connected to the computer. Then turn the import device off, turn it on again, and then try to import again.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when there are multiple devices that are turned on and connected to a Windows Vista-based computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, make sure that the device from which you want to import a video clip is turned on.

You may have to turn off all devices, and then restart importing the video clip for the device to be detected.

Note Windows Vista may detect the device several seconds after you turn off the device. Make sure that Windows Vista detects the device as disconnected before you turn the device back on.

To verify that the devices are connected and that Windows Vista detects the devices, you have to use Device Manager.

To start Device Manager, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Maintenance.
  3. Click Device Manager.
