On This PageSYMPTOMSWhen you try to change the computer type by using Device Manager, you do not have the option to downgrade to a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) that is set up to use a single-processor advanced programmable interrupt controller (APIC). Additionally, after you try to change this setting by using any of the available options in Device Manager, a programmable interrupt controller (PIC) HAL is installed. If you try to restart the computer, the computer may not start. This problem occurs when you use Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on a computer that is using an HAL that is set up to use an APIC. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Windows Server 2003 default installation does not provide APIC options for changing the HAL on an APIC computer. RESOLUTIONService pack informationTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows Server 2003.
