Symptoms

Consider the following scenario in Microsoft Office Visio 2007 or in Microsoft Office Visio 2003:

  • You create a new Visio 2007 drawing file by using a template that is based on either US units or metric units.

  • You click Page Setup under the File menu, and then change the default units on the Page Properties tab. You might change from US units, such as Feet and Inches, to a metric unit, such as Millimeters, Centimeters, or Meters. Alternatively, you might change from metric units to US units.

  • You then add a shape from the Shapes pane to the drawing. When you do this, the shape's width and height are displayed in the Size & Position window in the default units for that stencil, instead of in the units that you specified.

For example, a shape from a stencil that uses US units has a width and height that are listed in feet and inches.

Cause

This issue occurs because the shapes in a stencil are measured in the default measurement units for that stencil. Shapes from a stencil that uses US units are measured in feet and inches. Shapes from a stencil that uses metric units are measured in millimeters.

Therefore, when you add a shape to a drawing, the Width and Height boxes in the Size & Position window display the values for that shape in the shape's default measurement units.

Note If you resize the shape, the width and height values in the Size & Position window change to match the new measurement settings for the drawing.
