Error message when you run an application that uses the Active Accessibility Text Services APIs to retrieve text that is being processed on a Windows XP-based computer: "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close"

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows XP-based computer that has Microsoft Office 2003 installed, you run an application that uses the Active Accessibility Text Services APIs to retrieve the text that is being processed. When this application is running, the Winword.exe process crashes. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience
When you click What data does this error report contain? in the error box, the following information is displayed:
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: Application Version AppStamp:Application Stamp
ModName: msaatext.dll ModVer: 2.0.10413.0
ModStamp:3b7dfed0 fDebug: 0 Offset: 0000d0b7
Note This problem does not occur in the other Office applications.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of an access violation in the Msaatext.dll file. This access violation occurs when the application uses the IAccClientDocMgr interface and the ItextStoreAnchor interface.

WORKAROUND

To retrieve the text that is being processed, use an application that is based on Microsoft Windows Text Services Framework.
