Error message when you select a custom range in an Excel worksheet to try to link to shapes in Visio 2007: "The selected worksheet range cannot be imported"

SYMPTOMS

When you select a custom range in a Microsoft Excel worksheet and then try to import data to link to shapes in a Microsoft Office Visio 2007 drawing, the data is not imported. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The selected worksheet range cannot be imported.
Make sure the worksheet name does not contain leading spaces or any of the following reserved characters:
Accent ("`"), exclamation ("!"), or pound ("#").

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the worksheet name contains any of the following characters:
Leading spaces
Number sign
Exclamation point
Acute accent
Any low ASCII character (0 through 31)

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, rename the worksheet in Excel. When you rename the worksheet, do not use any of the characters that are listed in the "Cause" section.
