OneNote 2007 notebooks may become unreadable on a removable media storage drive

Expand all | Collapse all

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You save a Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 notebook on a removable media storage device such as a FireWire or USB external hard disk drive, an SD memory card, or a USB flash drive. You edit the notebook. When you disconnect the removable media storage device, you do not use the Safely Remove Hardware utility that is located in the notification area.

When you reconnect the removable media storage device, the device may be corrupted. One or more notebooks may become unreadable.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because OneNote 2007 synchronizes changes that are made in each open notebook. If you do not use the Safely Remove Hardware utility to disconnect the removable media storage device, OneNote 2007 may try to automatically synchronize data on the device when you disconnect it. If this occurs, the notebooks that were open may become unreadable.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this issue, always close all open OneNote 2007 notebooks that are located on the removable media storage device. Then, use the Safely Remove Hardware utility to correctly disconnect the removable media storage device.
