Consider the following scenario. You publish a table in SQL Server 2005. The table contains a column that is defined as the text data type, the ntext data type, or the varchar(max) data type. You have an empty string stored in the column. In this scenario, the empty string is replicated as a NULL value when you synchronize the table to a SQL Server Compact Edition subscriber. Additionally, if the column is defined to disallow NULL values, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. This hotfix contains only those files that are required to correct the issues that this article lists. This hotfix may not contain of all the files that you must have to fully update a product to the latest build.
