SUMMARY

This article describes the following about this hotfix release:
  • The issues that are fixed by the hotfix package
  • The prerequisites for installing the hotfix package
  • Whether you must restart the computer after you install the hotfix package
  • Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
  • Whether you must make any registry changes
  • The files that are contained in the hotfix package

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, you perform one of the following operations:
  • You run the following statement.
    DBCC FREEPROCCACHE
  • You perform an ALTER DATABASE operation.
  • You run the sp_configure stored procedure, or you run the sp_detach_db stored procedure.
  • You restore a database.
When you perform one of these operations, the following symptoms may occur:
  • The server stops responding.
  • The performance is slow when you run a query.
  • A time-out occurs when you run a query.
Additionally, the following error message may be logged in the SQL Server 2000 error log:
Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0
Process 51:0 (dbc) UMS Context 0x018DA930 appears to be non-yielding on Scheduler 0.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because SQL Server takes a long time to free a large procedure cache. The operations that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section trigger a process to free the procedure cache. If the procedure cache is large, this problem occurs.
