SYMPTOMS

The AutoComplete box in an iframe object may not appear in the correct location in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

CAUSE

In some cases, this problem occurs because the window.screenTop property value is calculated incorrectly. In other case, if the iframe object has a relative position style, the offset of the iframe object is incorrect when it is used to calculate the position of the AutoComplete box.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

This hotfix replaces the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 920681.

Registry information

After you apply this hotfix, you must add and configure a registry value. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_SKIP_ROW_IN_OFFSET_HEIGHT_CALCULATION_KB920681, and then press ENTER.

    Note that the registry key name does not match the current article number. The original version of this fix was released in hot fix 920681. The fix was then revised in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article, and the original article was removed.
  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  8. Type 1, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor.
  10. Restart Internet Explorer.

  1. Add the following code example to a text file, and then save the file as Top.htm.

  2. Add the following code example to a text file, and then save the file as Tabframe2.htm.

    </HTML>
    
  3. Save Top.htm and Tabframe2.htm to a Web server.
  4. Open Top.htm, type hello in the text box, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type h in the text box.
The AutoComplete box does not appear in the correct location.
