When you unlock a Windows Vista-based workstation to which you logged on by using cached credentials, you may receive a warning message. This warning message states that your password will expire soon and advises you to change it.

If a domain controller cannot be located when you try to log on to a Windows Vista-based workstation, you are logged on locally by using cached credentials. If the workstation is locked, you may receive the warning message that is mentioned in the "Introduction" section after you unlock the workstation. However, because you are currently not logged on to the network, you cannot change your password. Instead, you must wait until the next time that you log on to the network to change your password.

You may receive this message even if you recently changed your password when you were logged on to another computer that is connected to the network. If you changed your password on the other computer but have not logged on to the network again from the Windows Vista-based workstation, your cached credentials will not reflect the new password. Your cached credentials will be updated the next time that you use the new password to log on to the network from the Windows-Vista based workstation.
